Roundup for Flannel Friday 7/31/2015

Hey Flannel Friday Friends, I'm glad to be hosting this week! Our programming session at my library has ended today. Whew! What a great session! We had so much fun with our Super Hero Friends!
Now to gather ideas from the Flannel Friday Roundups and plan our fall session! I'm sure you'll be able to use some of these ideas from this week's contributors!
From Storytime Bandit comes 10 of the most intricate, dizzy dragons made by an amazingly talented volunteer. This is such a cute rhyme and these dinosaurs are adorable. Plus she included the pattern!

Melissa @ Mel's Desk has an inspired post about Five Little Aliens! She has a rhyme/song to go with them. Check out the multiple ways these can be used; by shape, color or number of eyes!

This is the first of 3 posts by Katie @ Storytime Katie.  I love file folder rhymes and this is a classic, Scat the Cat.

This is the second post by Katie @ Storytime Katie just in time for our fall planning! She has an apple song to sing to the BINGO tune with double sided cards to print, laminate and sing, sing, sing!

Ta da!! Here is post number three by Katie @ Storytime Katie! These baby and mama animal sets could be used with several different themes!

Wow, thanks Katie for all the great posts this week!!

I've got a post this week about the nursery rhyme, Hickory, Dickory DockI have a couple of other links for nursery rhyme resources I hope you'll find helpful!

Hickory Dickory Dock!

Nursery rhymes are easy and fun. There are a lot of benefits for preschoolers in hearing and learning nursery rhymes. A wonderful online resource for nursery rhymes is dltk-teach.com.  I found this cute Hickory Dickory Dock that counts from 1-12 (noon). There are printable pieces from this site if you want to print and laminate them.   I made my set a long time ago. It is part Pellon and part felt diecuts and cutouts. I used my basic mouse pattern that I used for the Five Little Mice in this post HERE. I didn't worry that the bee and mouse are as big as the horse and cow! Thank goodness little kiddos don't call me on that! LOL!

Jean Warren has some excellent ideas for using nursery rhymes that I want to share with my prechooler's caregivers from her website, Preschool Express. Her site is a treasure trove of rhymes and activities that can be adapted for storytime! I also found this great song resource at Nancymusic.com. Here's a link for printable pictures to make books that go with the songs, including one for Hickory, Dickory Dock!. Don't Throw Your Trash in My Backyard!

Here's my inspired post about Garbage Trucks! There are several great posts about trash that I drew from to make my storytime theme. There's this one at Libraryland and another great post at Miss Sarah Storytime. Here's a post at Read, Sarah, Read! and then a stinky, smelly storytime at Awesome Storytime.
This post at Destination Storytime has a printable set of trashy Alphabet cards to play a game after reading I Stink! by Kate and Jim McMullen.

I used a Google image that I printed and laminated and added velcro to the back to use with the Five Green Garbage Trucks rhyme.
Even though there were so many great rhymes already done, I had to make my own! LOL!
Here's a link for a printable copy of:
Garbage Trucks Each Day of the Week. I used Google images and laminated them, cut them out and added magnets to the back. You can let the kiddos help you add the pieces to the board as you say the rhyme. You can also play, "Which One's Missing?" with the colored trashcans or trucks.

Who knew that garbage and trash could be so much Fun With Friends at Storytime?!  There are more great posts on the Flannel Friday Roundup. The Wheels on the Firetruck...

This summer we will celebrate our community heroes, Firefighters! I found this cute set in our files that was made by a previous librarian. Here's the link to print out 'The Wheels on the (Fire)truck'. I add each piece as we sing the song. I couldn't leave well enough alone LOL! I did stiffen the small pieces with glue on the back and added glitter to the light that I place on the top of the firetruck. I used black fabric paint on the hook, hose and the siren (white part in front of the light) I also used fabric paint to update the two little firefighters too. I do have another post about Firefighters and here are some ideas @ Storytime with Miss Tara and friends. Check out the resources @ MakingLearningFun.com. You can listen to a cute song called Fire Truck by Ivan Ulz sung on Youtube

EEeekk! Snakes in the Grass!

There's something fun and shivery about doing a snake theme for Storytime. There's a fine balance between the scariness of snakes and the fun books and rhymes about snakes. Still, I really like this theme! I don't usually have realistic pictures to show, but I do mention that there are non-fiction books available that have great pictures and information for any kiddos that really want to investigate snakes!  I like to use my soft, beanie baby snake as a prop and let the kiddos touch it. I've got a couple of rhymes to share that I use with the felt snakes.  I have 2 different 5 little whats-it rhymes: '5 Little Snakes' and 'Five Little Snakes'. One of the rhymes calls for specific colors in the rhyme. You can make your snakes any colors you'd like! Here's mine:
I think I got the pattern from the craft that I offered. I believe I originally found this idea and the patterns in one of the series of monthly idea books by The Education Center: Mailbox Magazine.

This is easy prep and a great fine motor, eye-hand coordination activity. Actually, you could let the kiddos cut the 'grass' at the top of the 9x12 piece of construction paper. I'd probably prep the slits for weaving. But you could have the paper folded with lines drawn for the older kiddos to cut. Snakes in the grass are a lot of Fun with Friends at Sssstorytime! There are more great posts on the Flannel Friday Roundup. Check out the wonderful resources on the Flannel Friday Pinterest Boards.
